Know the Apps and Services in the HMS

by Thomas Ford

For developers and others who are following tech trends, you’d probably know by now that the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) is a serious competitor to the Google Mobile Services (GMS).

Before the ban placed on them by the US government, Huawei has been relying on GMS to meet all their app and core needs. And who wouldn’t? Google has been the live wire for most Android Smartphones that exist. The ban implied that Huawei could no longer do business or have any dealing with its American counterpart.

This meant that Huawei could not include popular Google features like Gmail, Google Map, Drive, YouTube, Google Chrome, etc. and also popular social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

How could they wriggle out of the mess they found themselves?

They decided to create an alternative, which is now known globally as HMS. It’s a whole new system of apps, developers, and cloud services tailored to suit their needs. If the ban is eventually going to be overturned, there might not return to using GMS as HMS has made massive success already.

So, now that you know the history, what is the HMS and what does it entail?

HMS is simply a group of services and applications with advanced features like push notifications, Huawei ID, and other services tailored for its ecosystem. It aims to provide faster and easier experiences for its users. Since they can’t use GMS, they’ve expanded HMS for all its users globally.

As of January 2020, HMS could boast of over 50,000 apps integrated into its core, although its counterpart Google Play Store boasts of over 3 million apps. HMS is used by over 600 million active users monthly, spanning over 168 countries.
